Calgary Herald

The Calgary Herald is a daily newspaper in Calgary, Alberta, Canada covering general news, owned by CanWest Global Communications Corp. It covers the full gamut of news items, from national, to regional, to local. It reports on news, arts, culture, sports, and so on. It has everything that any other major newspaper in any other major city would have.

The Herald was first published on August 31, 1883 by Andrew Armour and Thomas. It started as a weekly paper with just four pages created on a hand press, becoming a daily two years later in 1885. It was only in 1983 that the Herald was published seven days a week. Today it is one of the most popular news sources in Calgary. Many people read the Herald every day, religiously.

The Herald also publishes Neighbours, a weekly alternative newspaper dedicated to the community spirit. In the spring of 2005, the Herald launched Dose, a free daily targeted at young twentysomething commuters.

The newspaper is available online at http://www.canada.com/calgaryherald/index.html. The online version offers almost everything its print edition offers, plus a little more, due to the vast range of benefits integration with the Internet affords.

The fact that the Herald has spread out to spawn other newspapers and an online version is testimony to its success. With the corporate backing of CanWest, the newspaper has been able to take full advantage of its institutional memory. This has helped to bind the city closer together, giving even more reason for Calgary to take pride in itself.
